Understanding Time Zones

A time zone is a region of Earth that has adopted the same standard time. The world is divided into 24 primary time zones, each generally 15 degrees of longitude apart, corresponding to one hour of time difference.

IANA Time Zone Database

The IANA (Internet Assigned Numbers Authority) Time Zone Database, also known as the tz database or zoneinfo database, is the standard reference for time zone information. It includes:

  • Current and historical time zone offsets
  • Daylight Saving Time (DST) rules and transitions
  • Time zone abbreviations
  • Geographic coordinates for each zone

UTC Offset

The UTC offset shows how many hours and minutes a time zone is ahead of or behind Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). For example:

  • +05:30 - India Standard Time (5 hours 30 minutes ahead of UTC)
  • -05:00 - Eastern Standard Time (5 hours behind UTC)
  • +00:00 - Greenwich Mean Time (same as UTC)

Daylight Saving Time (DST)

Many regions adjust their clocks forward by one hour during summer months to make better use of daylight. When DST is active, the UTC offset changes. Our system automatically tracks DST transitions for accurate time display.
