Understanding the Time Zone Map
The world is divided into time zones based on longitude. Each time zone is approximately 15 degrees of longitude wide, corresponding to one hour of time difference from neighboring zones.
How Time Zones Work
Time zones are measured as offsets from Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), which is the primary time standard. The Prime Meridian (0Β° longitude) passes through Greenwich, England, establishing UTC+0 as the reference point.
Geographic Distribution
- Western Hemisphere: UTC-12 to UTC-1 (negative offsets)
- Prime Meridian: UTC+0 (Greenwich Mean Time)
- Eastern Hemisphere: UTC+1 to UTC+14 (positive offsets)
Special Cases
Some time zones don't follow the standard one-hour intervals:
- Half-hour offsets: India (UTC+5:30), Iran (UTC+3:30)
- 45-minute offsets: Nepal (UTC+5:45)
- Extended zones: Kiribati (UTC+14) for economic reasons
Political Boundaries
Time zone boundaries often follow political borders rather than strict longitude lines. This means countries can choose their time zones based on economic and social factors, not just geography.
